人類肉眼可見的恒星有近六千顆 。為了便于記憶和研究 ， 古代巴比掄人將天空分為許多區域 ， 稱為“星座” ， 每一個星座可以由其中亮星的特殊分布辨認出來 。古希臘人在公元前270年前后把他們所能見到的部分天空劃分成48個星座 ， 并用假象的線條將星座內的主要亮星連起來 ， 把它們想象成動物或人物的形象 ， 結合神話故事給它們起出適當的名字 ， 這就是星座名稱的由來 。希臘神話故事中的48個星座大都居于北方天空和赤道南北 ?，F在國際上通用的星座共88個
